Pixie Italian: coastal Italian, and a long lunch

One of the newer Italian rooms in town, and one of the few that leans on the lunch rather than the evening.

Pixie Italian's own homepage takes bookings through SevenRooms, but not its hours or its prices, so neither of those appears below.

What it is

A coastal Italian kitchen in Byron Bay whose own posts keep returning to the same idea — a good bottle and a very long lunch — and which programmes around occasions, not around a fixed weekly rhythm.

Coastal Italian is a useful label here because it separates this from the pizza-led rooms in the register. It means seafood, vegetables and pasta cooked with restraint, not a wood oven doing the work.

A room that expects to be booked

Its own site runs a table-booking system, which puts it in a minority here: most rooms in this register run none at all. The practical effect is that this is a room that expects to be booked, not walked into, and it is worth doing on a weekend.

20 of the 60 venue sites read for this register show any booking system at all. In a town this busy that is lower than most visitors assume, and it is why the advice on the booking page is mostly about ringing.

Long lunch as a stated position is the other thing worth noting. Most rooms in this town treat the middle of the day as the quiet shift and price it accordingly; a kitchen that builds its identity around it is choosing the harder and better half of the trade.

Italian, in a town that mostly does Mediterranean

The register holds several Mediterranean rooms and only a couple that are specifically Italian, which is a finer distinction than it sounds. Mediterranean here usually means share plates across Spain, Greece and the Levant. Italian means pasta, and pasta is a different kitchen discipline.

Coastal Italian narrows it again — seafood and vegetables over long-cooked meat, which suits both the climate and what is landed nearby. It is a recent addition to the town's range and not a long-standing part of it.

A designed room, and what that signals

Its own site credits the interior to a named design studio and places the look in 1970s Italy. That is a claim about the room and not about the kitchen, and it is unusual enough here to note: very few venues in this register lead with who designed the space.

It does explain the layout. A bar, a terrace and a dining room treated as three separate places to sit is a design decision before it is a service one, and it is worth deciding which of the three you want before you book.
