Open or gone: every venue in the shire, with the date it was checked
This is the whole register. 65 venues confirmed trading, 2 confirmed closed, each one carrying the month the check was made instead of a promise to be current.
Where the 65 open venues actually are
Byron Shire, drawn from the real coastline, with distance measured from the middle of town. Circle size is the number of venues in that area. Choose one to filter the register.
Reading it
The rings are 2, 5 and 10 kilometres from the middle of town, so the map answers the question the guide is built around: how far is it, really.
Byron Bay town is walkable end to end in about twenty minutes, and Main Beach (0.9 km), Clarkes Beach (1.3 km), The Pass (1.7 km) and Wategos Beach (2.2 km) sit along the sand inside the first ring.
The rest needs a car: Byron Arts & Industry Estate (4.1 km), Suffolk Park (4.3 km), Belongil (4.9 km), Ewingsdale (6.3 km), McLeods Shoot (6.9 km), Bangalow (10.4 km), Newrybar (10.9 km), Possum Creek (11.5 km), Brunswick Heads (13.8 km) and Nashua (17.2 km). Every one of those figures is measured between coordinates, not guessed from a drive.
Uki (1 venue, 38 km out) is too far to plot at this scale — over an hour north-west into the Tweed Valley — and is in the register below like everything else.
Two circles are drawn a little apart from their true centres where the places themselves overlap: Clarkes Beach and The Pass are 400 m from one another, and each is shifted 78 m so both stay readable. Nothing else on the map is moved.
The coastline is the real one, traced from OpenStreetMap, and the land is filled from it. The easternmost point marked on it is Cape Byron, which is also the easternmost point of mainland Australia.
The small dots are venues placed at their own coordinates — 52 of the 65 trading: 29 matched by venue name in OpenStreetMap and 23 from a verified street address. The remaining 13 could not be placed and sit inside their area circle instead; two of them publish an address that OpenStreetMap does not hold.
Four circles are drawn without a name: Clarkes Beach, Main Beach, Wategos Beach and The Pass are all inside the first ring, within walking distance of the middle of town, and their captions sat on top of one another at this scale. Hover or tab to a circle for its name, or read it in the register below.
The numbered circles are the accounting layer and the control: they cover all 65 trading venues, dot or no dot, and clicking one filters the register. Searching venue names alone had resolved 29; geocoding the street addresses raised it to 52.

How the register is built
Candidates came from the outbound links and body text of thirty published Byron Bay travel and food guides, then from the byronbay.com visitor directory and four current best-of lists. Each venue’s own website was located and probed. Each trading status was then confirmed separately against a dated source.
That last step is the one that matters and the one most lists skip. Harvest Newrybar closed in December 2024, reported at the time by The Echo, and its website still serves a full restaurant homepage. Any process that treats a working site as proof of a working business publishes it as open, which is what has happened across most of the guides currently ranking for this town.
Four venues in the first pass turned out to be listed in the older guides under domains that have since lapsed. Il Buco now trades at ilbucobyron.com. Treehouse moved to treehousebyron.com.au. In each case the guide entry points at nothing, which is indistinguishable from a closed restaurant unless somebody checks.
Two dates, and why they are not the same date
A register that promises a dated status has to say which date it means. This one keeps two and does not blur them.
Confirmed August 2026 against dated sources — that is what the status in every row means. Separately, the 61 venue websites the register holds were re-fetched in September 2026 and none of them had changed. A site answering is not evidence that a business is open, so a re-fetch never moves a status on its own; it decides where the next confirmation pass starts.
The confirmation pass is slow and partly manual, because a dated source has to be found and the venue has to be named in it. The re-fetch is a job that runs on its own and answers a narrower question: has anything about this venue’s own site moved since last time. When it finds something it writes a list for someone to check, and it is not permitted to change a status by itself.
The sources the current pass was checked against
Every venue in the register carries a line saying what confirmed it. Where that is a published page, it is named and linked here, and the venue appears on the page by name. Where it is not, the entry says what it was instead: a dated platform listing, a published programme of shows or classes, a piece of trade coverage, a reported closure.
- the official ByronBay.com visitor guide 25 venues confirmed
- Australian Traveller 17 venues confirmed
- The Byron Bay Guide, restaurants 5 venues confirmed
- The Byron Bay Guide, cafes 5 venues confirmed
- The Byron Bay Guide, cocktail bars 2 venues confirmed
- The Byron Bay Guide, Newrybar 1 venue confirmed
- Sitchu 8 venues confirmed
- Reflections Holidays 6 venues confirmed
- Concrete Playground 3 venues confirmed
- The Echo closure report
- St. Elmo Steak House, Indianapolis the business itself
The thirty older guides surveyed in the review survey are a separate set and are cited by publication rather than by link, because that survey is about how far they have drifted, not about where to eat.
What is deliberately not here
No opening hours, no prices, no menus. All three go stale faster than the register can be re-checked, and a wrong opening time sends somebody across town for nothing. Every entry links to the venue’s own page, where those things are current. A status of trading means the business is operating, not that it is serving at this hour, so check the day before you drive out to the hinterland.
Street addresses appear on 49 of the 67 entries. A venue only gets one when a source that names that venue states it — its own website, the ByronBay.com visitor guide, or a guide page with a labelled address field — and the candidates agree. The remaining 18 are shown by area alone. A guessed street number is worse than none: it sends somebody to the wrong door with confidence.
The published record is a separate question from the register, and who actually reviews Byron Bay covers how far the guides have drifted from what is open.
Neither closed venue appears as a recommendation anywhere on this site. They are recorded here, and St Elmo has its own page, because a guide that quietly deletes what has gone is how the next reader ends up standing outside a locked door.
Questions about the register
What counts as evidence that a venue is open?
A dated source from 2026: a current listing, a piece in the regional press, a reservation system with live availability. A homepage that loads is explicitly not accepted, because a closed restaurant’s site can stay up indefinitely.
What does "trading, altered" mean?
The address is operating but not in the format it is known for. Fleet at Brunswick Heads is the current case: the space is in use, and it is not running the service its older reviews describe. Worth reading before you drive out there.
How often does this change?
The whole register is re-confirmed in a pass and stamped with the month. The current pass is August 2026. Individual corrections are folded in between passes.
A venue is missing. Is that deliberate?
Sometimes. Accommodation, homewares and bathhouses are excluded even when they serve food, and venues outside Byron Shire are out of scope, which is why Halcyon House at Cabarita Beach does not appear. Otherwise it is an omission worth correcting.
