Plenty of the restaurants in Byron Bay sit under more than one of those headings, so the 9 numbers add up to more than the register holds: a pub with a dining room is counted once under dinner and once under bars, because on the night it is both. Each card is the register below with a single filter on it. Two of the distilleries sit out in the Arts and Industry Estate, not anywhere you would walk to after dinner.
Byron Bay restaurants turn over faster than the guides that list them. 21 of the venues trading now appear in none of the thirty guides, because they opened after those guides were written, and the two most heavily covered names in them are both gone.
The places to eat Byron Bay visitors get sent to cluster hard around Jonson Street and the Beach Hotel. That is not a criticism of any of them. It does mean the town reads as smaller and more expensive than it is, because Ewingsdale, Bangalow, Newrybar and Brunswick Heads barely register in a weekend itinerary, and between them they hold some of the best restaurants Byron Bay can put in front of you on an ordinary Tuesday.

How this guide knows a place is still trading
A live website proves nothing at all.
Harvest Newrybar closed in December 2024 after seventeen years. The Echo reported it at the time. Its website still serves a full restaurant homepage, with a menu, twenty months later, and it appears in eleven of the thirty published Byron Bay guides that point at this domain. Anyone building a list by checking whether a site loads would publish it as open, which is roughly what has happened across most of the guides currently ranking.
So the rule here is narrow: a venue is marked as trading only on a dated source from 2026, or marked closed on a reported closure. Never on a working homepage. That is why two names in the register are struck through, why the count reads sixty-five rather than sixty-seven, and why the whole thing carries the month it was checked instead of a vague promise to be current.
Most Byron Bay restaurants here link straight to their own booking page, because a phone number in a guide goes stale the same week the guide does. Of the sixty-five restaurants in Byron Bay and the shire that are trading, sixty-one have a working site of their own.
The same pass turned up four venues whose listings in the older guides pointed at addresses that have since lapsed. Il Buco now trades at ilbucobyron.com; the domain printed in those guides resolves to nothing. Pixie has rebranded to Pixie Italian. Small stuff, except that a dead link is indistinguishable from a dead restaurant if nobody looks.

You do not have to take any of it on trust. Every entry in the register says what confirmed it: 50 of the 67 are cited to one of 11 dated sources, each one named and linked, and the rest carry the specific thing that stood in for a guide entry — a dated listing, a published programme of shows, a reported closure. How many restaurants in Byron Bay are actually open?
Sixty-five Byron Bay restaurants, cafes and bars were trading when this register was last checked, in August 2026. Two more appear in current travel guides and have closed for good. The number moves, which is the whole reason it carries a date.
Where do locals eat, as opposed to visitors?
The split is geographic more than anything. Visitor traffic concentrates on Jonson Street and the Beach Hotel end of town, while a lot of the places to eat Byron Bay residents rate sit out in Ewingsdale, Bangalow and Brunswick Heads. The Farm at Ewingsdale and Frida’s Field at Nashua both take a car.
Do I need to book?
For anything at the fine-dining end, yes, and often a week out in January. How booking works in Byron Bay covers which venues take reservations and which ones only ever do walk-ins.
Is St Elmo still open?
No. St Elmo Dining Room & Bar traded on Fletcher Street for close to a decade and closed in 2021. It is still listed in a surprising number of guides. The page about St Elmo covers what it was and where its regulars went.
How often is this checked?
Every venue in the register carries the month it was last confirmed. The current pass is August 2026. A venue is only ever marked as trading on the strength of a dated 2026 source, never because its website happened to load.
