Group bookings and set menus: how a long table works in Byron Bay
Past about eight people, most kitchens in this shire will move you onto a banquet menu. That is not an upsell. It is the only way a small kitchen can serve a long table at once.
Why the set menu appears
A Byron Bay dining room is typically forty to seventy covers with a kitchen sized to match. Ten people ordering individually at eight o’clock on a Saturday will hold up every other table in the room, so the kitchen offers a fixed menu at a fixed price and everything lands together. Nobody is trying to take more money off you. They are trying to get the food out.
This is worth knowing before you ring, because the conversation goes better when you open with the number and the date rather than the menu.
What to ask for, in order
The number first, then the date, then whether there is a minimum spend, then whether the set menu is per head or per table. The fourth question is the one people forget and the one that changes the bill most.
Deposits are normal for larger groups and so is a card held against no-shows. If a venue asks for one, that is a sign it does this regularly, which is what you want.
Where the long tables actually are
Share-plate kitchens handle groups more gracefully than anywhere else, because the format already assumes a table eating together. The Mez Club and Loft Byron Bay both work that way. Out of town, The Farm at Ewingsdale and Frida’s Field at Nashua have the room and the set-up, and the pubs will take a big loose group on a night when a restaurant would refuse.
One caution. A venue that has recently changed format may no longer run the group service a two-year-old guide describes. Fleet at Brunswick Heads is the current example in this register. Ring, rather than book on the strength of a page written in 2019.

Questions about group bookings
What size counts as a group here?
Eight is the usual threshold at which a Byron Bay kitchen will move you to a set menu. Twelve and above, expect it to be compulsory, and expect a deposit.
Does this page list the banquet menus themselves?
No. Set menus change with the season and with what the kitchen can get, and a banquet menu reproduced from a guide is out of date within months. Every venue below links to its own page, which is where the current one lives.
Can we get a long table on a Saturday in January?
Only with real notice. January is the hardest month in the shire and the rooms that take long tables are the first to go. Ask about a Sunday or a weeknight instead and the answer changes completely.
Which venues suit a wedding party or a function?
The pubs and the larger hinterland rooms. The Farm at Ewingsdale, Frida’s Field at Nashua and Raes on Wategos all handle events as a matter of course, and the Beach Hotel and The Northern have the floor space for a bigger, looser night.
