The best Byron Bay bars: wine rooms, cocktails and late-pouring pubs

There are 20 places in the shire set up for a drink rather than a meal, and the useful division between the best bars in Byron Bay is not price. It is whether the room wants you to stay.

The best Byron Bay bars, split by what they are for

Byron Bay bars close earlier than most visitors expect, and the reason is structural rather than cultural.

Most of the bars in Byron Bay are attached to a kitchen. That is the defining fact about drinking here and it explains why visitors so often end up in a pub by ten o’clock: the good rooms stop serving when the food does.

The exceptions matter. Locura and Saltwater Social Club are built as bars first. Balcony Bar & Oyster Co has the position, upstairs on the corner, and knows it. Treehouse and Light Years both work as a long evening, not a sitting.

4 pubs carry the rest of the night. The Beach Hotel is the one every guide names and the one you will find without help. The Railway Friendly Bar is the one locals mean when they say they are going for a beer.

Wine: 4 rooms that take it seriously

Bar Heather is a wine bar with European food rather than a restaurant with a wine list, and the difference shows on the by-the-glass selection. Luna Wine Store deals in natural and independent bottles and is the sibling of Casa Luna. Fleet at Brunswick Heads has moved format at least once; read its current offering before you drive out. Moonlight is the odd one out: the kitchen is Japanese hibachi, but the list is where the attention has gone.

Between them these are the best bars in Byron Bay for anyone who came for the drink itself. Only Luna Wine Store sits on the Jonson Street run; the rest are down a lane or out of town, which is not a coincidence: the Byron Bay bars that live or die on their list have to be worth a walk, and the ones on the corner do not.

Cocktails, beer and 3 distilleries

Cocktails are the thinnest category in town, oddly. Locura is the dedicated cocktail room; beyond it, the cocktails worth ordering are mostly in restaurant bars, at Light Years and The Mez Club. If a list of 20 venues yielding one dedicated cocktail bar sounds low, it is, and it is the clearest gap in the shire’s drinking scene.

Beer is the opposite, and it is the one category where Byron Bay bars genuinely lead the region. Stone & Wood built its name here and its taproom is still the benchmark, with Common People Brewing at Bangalow and Byron Bay Brewery making three. The distilleries are newer: Cape Byron out at McLeods Shoot, with Lord Byron and Byron Bay Spirits both on the Arts and Industry Estate.

On happy hour, and why this page does not list one

A happy hour Byron Bay drinkers can actually rely on is harder to find than it should be in a town with this much trade. Several venues run one. None of them publishes it in a form that stays true for more than a season.

So there is no happy hour Byron Bay table here, and there will not be one. Printing a time that has quietly changed is worse than printing nothing, which is the same reason this guide carries no opening hours anywhere. Every entry links to the venue’s own page instead.

Questions about drinking in Byron Bay

Which bars are open latest?

Saltwater Social Club and Locura are the two set up as late-night rooms and not restaurants that serve drinks. The pubs run to their own licences. Hours are not recorded here, for the reason given above, so check the venue before you plan a night around it.

Where is the best wine list?

Bar Heather, Luna Wine Store and Fleet at Brunswick Heads are built around wine instead of treating it as an accessory. Moonlight pours biodynamic bottles alongside a Japanese hibachi kitchen, which is a stranger and better combination than it sounds.

Can you tour the distilleries?

Cape Byron Distillery runs tours of its rainforest site at McLeods Shoot, and Lord Byron Distillery has a tasting room in the Arts and Industry Estate. Byron Bay Spirits Distillery pours a few doors along the same estate, and makes up the third.

Is there live music?

The Railway Friendly Bar, The Northern and the Beach Hotel are the three pubs that carry a regular programme. The Rails, as everyone calls it, has done so for decades.
