Byron Bay takeaway: a short list, because a long one would be wrong

Byron Bay is a sit-down town. The takeaway trade exists, it is genuinely good in two or three places, and it is much smaller than the search volume implies.

Fishmongers is a takeaway counter and does the job it was built for. Fishheads sits on Main Beach and catches most of the passing trade for the same reason. For wood-fired, Bay Pizza Lab and Il Buco are the dedicated options, with Treehouse out at Belongil as a full venue that also boxes them up.

Beyond that the honest answer is that you are asking a restaurant kitchen for a favour. Plenty will say yes. Few are set up for it, the wait is unpredictable when the dining room is full, and you will usually eat better by sitting down or by going to one of the four places above.

Two categories genuinely work as food to go and get overlooked because they are not dinner. Blue Cow Gelato is a walk-and-eat proposition by definition, and Byron Bay Cookies has been selling something you carry away since long before the town had a restaurant scene worth arguing about. Community Bagels covers the same ground at the other end of the day.

What to do instead, most nights

Buy well and eat outside. The Byron Farmers Market runs Thursday mornings at the Cavanbah Centre, the bakeries carry through to early afternoon, and the beach is two minutes from anywhere in town. That combination beats most takeaway containers and it is what a lot of residents actually do on a weekday evening.

Parking is the other thing nobody mentions. Collecting an order in the middle of town between six and eight in summer can take longer than the cooking did, and the loading zones on Jonson Street are enforced. If the order is coming from the centre, walk to it.

If you want a hot meal delivered to a house at Suffolk Park at nine on a Tuesday, this is not the town for it, and no guide that tells you otherwise has checked.

What the venues themselves show

That claim about delivery is checkable rather than an impression, which is why it is made here. Every venue website in this register was read, and 60 of them answered. 2 of those show an ordering or delivery platform of any kind: Kinoko through Uber Eats, Top Shop through Mr Yum.

2 out of 60 is not a thin sample, it is the answer. A town where 2 food businesses have wired up an ordering platform is a town that expects you to walk in, and every listicle promising Byron Bay delivery is describing a different place.

34 of them do publish a menu, though, which is the useful half of the same finding: you cannot get most of this food brought to you, and you can read exactly what it is before you leave the house.

The other reason the list stays short

A takeaway counter and a restaurant that will box something up are different businesses with different equipment. A counter is built around a queue, a short menu and food that survives ten minutes in paper. A dining room is built around a table, and everything it cooks is designed to be eaten where it lands.

Padding this page with the second kind would make it longer and make it wrong, which is the trade every other Byron takeaway list has made. If the question is really about eating well without an occasion, the counter-service page is the honest version of it and covers 20 rooms rather than 9.

Questions about takeaway

Is there much delivery in Byron Bay?

Less than a town this size suggests, and the coverage thins fast outside the town boundary. Anything at Ewingsdale, Newrybar or Nashua is a collection job.

Where do I get fish and chips?

Fishmongers is the takeaway counter. Fishheads at Main Beach does both sit-down and takeaway and is the one most visitors find first because of where it is.

Can I get pizza?

Bay Pizza Lab, Il Buco and Treehouse cover wood-fired between them. Treehouse is a full venue that also does pizza rather than a pizza shop, which matters on a Friday.

Why is this list short?

Because it is accurate. Most Byron Bay kitchens will put food in a container if you ask, but that is not the same as being set up for it, and a padded list would send you to a restaurant that would rather you sat down.
