What happened
Harvest at Newrybar closed on 13 December 2024 after seventeen years. The closure was reported at the time by The Echo, the Northern Rivers paper, and it is the reason this venue carries a status of closed in the register, not a status of trading.
It was not a marginal business. It appears in 11 of the 30 travel guides surveyed for this site, more than all but one other venue, and it ran a restaurant, a bakery and a deli on the same site in a hinterland village of a few hundred people.
Why it is the most useful entry in this register
Every automated signal about this business says it is open. The website resolves, serves a full restaurant homepage, and reads exactly as it did when the kitchen was running. A crawler cannot tell the difference. Neither can a guide written from other guides.
That is the whole argument for how this register is built. A live website is not evidence of trading, and a two-hundred response is not a fact about a business — it is a fact about a server. Every venue here is confirmed against a dated source or a closure report, and this is the entry that made that rule non-negotiable.
It also explains a pattern you may have noticed elsewhere: the guides that still rank for Byron Bay were written between 2015 and 2019 and they are still recommending this place.
What is there now
Newrybar still has a food business in the village — Newrybar Merchants, a cafe inside an artisan collective, which is trading and confirmed. It is a different proposition and a smaller one.
The wider hinterland has more than replaced the capacity, though not the institution: there are 12 venues out of town in this register, several of which opened after Harvest was written into the guides.
Newrybar itself is a good illustration of how thin the hinterland's margins are. A village of a few hundred people supported a restaurant, a bakery and a deli on one site for seventeen years, and when that went there was no second operator waiting to take the building on. What replaced it is smaller, and the difference is not made up anywhere else in the village.
A third of the shelf is still wrong about it
It is named in 11 of the 30 guides surveyed for this site, and it closed in 2024. Better than a third of that shelf still sends a reader to a door that does not open, and every one of those guides still ranks for this town.
That is the whole argument for keeping a dated register. A guide's authority and a guide's accuracy come apart quietly, and the gap opens widest around the rooms that were best liked.
