Common People Brewing: the hinterland taproom at Bangalow

A production brewery with a fireplace, ten kilometres inland, and the taproom in this register that behaves most like a pub.

Common People Brewing's own homepage publishes its menu, but not its hours or its prices, so neither of those appears below.

What it is

A craft brewery and tasting room in Bangalow, in the Byron hinterland: couches and a fireplace for the winter, a purpose-built deck for the summer, a core range and a rotating seasonal one. It runs a kitchen alongside the beer and a courtesy bus, which tells you most of what you need to know about how people get there.

Of the three brewery taprooms in the shire it is the one furthest from the coast and the one that reads least like a showroom for a beer brand.

Bangalow is not a detour

Bangalow is a town and not a turn-off, with its own main street and its own weekend trade, and the brewery is part of that, not an isolated stop. That makes it one of the few hinterland venues where the drive delivers you somewhere with other reasons to be.

It is also one of the venues trading today that appears in none of the thirty guides surveyed for this site — the hinterland has changed faster than the beachfront has, and the guides were written before most of it happened.

Three taprooms, and the one that is a room

Byron has a brewing reputation out of proportion to its size, largely on the back of one brand that grew far beyond the shire. What the register shows is that the taprooms behind that reputation are three, and they are not equivalent.

Two of them function as showrooms attached to a production line. This one has a fireplace, a deck, a kitchen and a courtesy bus, which is a set of decisions about an evening, not about a beer. If the plan is to stay somewhere for three hours, that distinction is the whole thing.

The courtesy bus is the detail worth noticing. A hinterland venue that runs one has decided that the drive is its problem and not yours, which is a rare position out here — the rest of the pages on this site treat the return leg as the visitor's arithmetic, because for almost every other rural venue it is.

What this register deliberately does not hold

Its own site carries a great deal this page does not: a takeaway menu, a courtesy bus, a weekly happy hour, a seasonal beer that turns over. None of it is dated. An undated operational detail goes out of date quietly, and that is the single failure this guide is built to avoid.

So the table above stops at what a dated source supports. For everything that moves week to week the brewery's own site is the answer, and this page will not pretend to be a fresher copy of it.
